Kalbod Design Studio, an Iranian architecture firm, has unveiled a visionary concept for NEOM Airport City in Saudi Arabia.

With a focus on tourism, the design features museums, galleries, and exhibitions, positioning itself as a distinctive tourist attraction for both visitors and residents of NEOM. 

The project aligns with NEOM’s emphasis on environmental sustainability as part of the NEOM Giga project.

The Visionary Perspective

A visionary perspective drives the concept for the NEOM Airport City, a magnanimous blueprint that aims to forge a robust connection between Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project and the global arena. 

The NEOM project is a significant part of the Saudi Vision 2030, a strategic program that Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman launched to transform the country’s economy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuel-based revenues.

Mohammad Rahimizadeh, the studio’s CEO and Principal Architect explained the mindset behind these visionary designs:

“Distinguished by its multifaceted functionality, this project is meticulously curated to align with the region’s emphasis on tourism. Beyond its primary role as an airport, NEOM Airport City stands as a distinctive tourist attraction. Its museums, galleries, and exhibitions serve as compelling destinations, captivating tourists and visitors to NEOM alike.” 

A Symbiotic Relationship

The NEOM Airport is strategically designed to form a symbiotic relationship with ‘THE LINE,’ a city stretching 170 kilometers, to cater to the region’s communication needs.

This unique alliance focuses on ensuring accessibility and promoting economic integration while emphasizing the region’s emphasis on tourism.

The idea of an airport as a lifestyle and retail destination is not new. Singapore Changi Airport, for example, has successfully marketed itself as a “lifestyle and retail destination on its own,” particularly after the opening of the Jewel Changi Airport in 2019. 

By integrating similar elements into its design, the NEOM Airport City aims to give travelers a unique and memorable experience.

Saudi Arabia’s Push for Tourism

The unveiling of the NEOM Airport City concept is part of Saudi Arabia’s aggressive push to diversify its economy away from fossil fuel-based revenues. The ‘Saudi Vision 2030’ program, launched by Mohammad bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, in January 2016, is at the heart of this transformation.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, is leading this transformation. It has already launched Riyadh Air and plans to establish NEOM Airlines to serve the metro region.

NEOM has recently unveiled Aquellum, a new futuristic lifestyle destination on the Gulf of Aqaba, blending luxury and nature, which will be hidden within a 450-meter-high mountain haven that blends grand architecture and cutting-edge technology to provide visitors with a futuristic experience.

Aquellum is part of a broader initiative and is not a standalone project. It is integrated into sustainable tourism destinations in the Gulf of Aqaba, such as Leyja, Epicon, Siranna, Utamo, and Norlana. These endeavors are committed to NEOM’s conservation and innovative development principles

Norlana is a luxury, world-class waterfront destination on the beautiful Gulf of Aqaba. Norlana is designed as an exclusive community with an ultra-luxury hotel, deluxe mansions, beachfront villas, residences, a superyacht marina, and a spectacular 18-hole golf course.

Utamo is an immersive cutting-edge art and entertainment destination in Saudi Arabia located along the Gulf of Aqaba coastline and nestled within mountains. It combines nature with technology. The entrance will feature a beautiful lush garden promenade leading to a 64m high entrance to the grand hall.

Siranna is an exclusive tourism escape on the Gulf of Aqaba coastline in northwest Saudi Arabia. The futuristic and ultra-luxurious hexagon-shaped hotel is due to feature a 65-room hotel and 35 exclusive residences designed in hexagonal pillars with uninterrupted views of the Red Sea.

Epicon is a new luxury coastal tourist destination in Saudi Arabia, featuring gravity-defying skyscrapers, a hotel, a luxury resort, and residences in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Leyja is a destination set to feature three luxury hotels in the Gulf of Aqaba. The trio of hotels will be overseen by the Habitas group and are scheduled to open in 2028.

These destinations are renowned as significant tourist attractions, distinguished by their towering skyscrapers, futuristic environments, and serene hotels seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings. 

Ecotourism development within this ambitious framework persistently reshapes the standards of excellence.
