The National Biotechnology Strategy represents a crucial step forward in improving the health and well-being of Saudi citizens while positioning the nation as a global leader in the biotechnology industry.

This comprehensive strategy outlines a roadmap to address critical health challenges, accelerate medical advancements, and enhance patient care. This strategy aims to transform healthcare and improve people’s lives nationwide by leveraging genomics, precision medicine, and advanced therapeutics.

The strategy focuses on four key strategic plays:

  • Vaccines: Developing end-to-end vaccine manufacturing capabilities for self-sufficiency and regional exports, driving R&D in innovative vaccine technologies, and becoming a regional hub for late-stage development.
  • Biomanufacturing and Localization: Building a state-of-the-art local biomanufacturing platform to increase self-sufficiency and export biologics/biosimilars globally, promoting biosimilar penetration to reduce healthcare spending.
  • Genomics: Expanding the national genomic database and analytics platform to foster research, drive prevention, and integrate genomic analysis and therapies into healthcare for more accurate diagnoses and effective interventions.
  • Plant Optimization: Enhancing food self-sufficiency and agricultural productivity, promoting climate sustainability and green practices. By leveraging biotechnology, the strategy aims to reduce reliance on food imports and bolster domestic production, ensuring a sustainable and self-sufficient food supply.

These strategic plays, along with broader enablement factors like sustainable talent, cutting-edge infrastructure, regulatory excellence, strategic funding, and geographical modeling, will propel the growth and impact of the biotech sector in Saudi Arabia.
