The Saudi Arabian bid was submitted just minutes after FIFA opened for proposals from Asia and Oceania on October 4th. Australia’s decision to step back from the race leaves the Middle Eastern nation as the only confirmed bidder.

Australia’s Decision

Football Australia (FA) confirmed they would not proceed with the bid for 2034. Instead, they have focused on hosting the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup and the 2029 Club World Cup.

“We believe we are in a strong position to host the oldest women’s international competition in the world – the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 – and then welcome the greatest teams in world football for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup,” FA read. Consequently, this decision solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position as the sole contender.

The Asian Support

The Asian Football Confederation, the governing body for soccer in the continent, expressed their unanimous support for the Saudi bid. This endorsement further strengthens Saudi Arabia’s candidature for hosting the 2034 World Cup.

The Previous Hosts

The 2030 tournament has already been awarded to Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with centenary games also being held in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.

A History of Sport Hosting

Saudi Arabia has a record of hosting major sporting events, including football, Formula 1, Golf, and boxing. A successful hosting of the World Cup would signify another significant milestone in their sports history.

The Vision

Hosting the World Cup aligns with Saudi Arabia’s vision of becoming a global hub for sports in line with Vision 2030. The country’s sports minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, referred to the bid as an “important and natural step in our journey as a country passionate about football.”

The Expectations

The 2034 edition of the World Cup would likely be held in winter due to the extreme heat in the summer. However, the focus on modernizing existing infrastructure could make it more environmentally friendly than previous tournaments.

Sporting Growth in Saudi Arabia

The FIFA congress will make the final decision in late 2024. Until then, all eyes are on Saudi Arabia as they remain the only bidder for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
