Flynas, the leading Saudi and global low-cost carrier, has become the 1st Saudi airline to join the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as an affiliate member. The move supports its efforts to develop sustainable and affordable tourism in the region.
Over the past several months, Flynas expanded its routes to Europe and Africa and was awarded the Best Low-Cost Airline in the Middle East for 2023.
The move sets a new precedent for the aviation industry and fortifies Flynas’s commitment to sustainable global tourism, aligning with its sustainability strategy and the Kingdom’s vision for the future of the travel sector.
A Leader in Sustainable Aviation
Flynas has consistently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability, with initiatives set to have a lasting impact on the environment, society, and the economy. The airline’s sustainability plan has been a driving force behind its efforts to shape the future of global travel and establish a sustainable tourism sector.
“Flynas places sustainability at the core of its operations, in line with the Kingdom’s goals to reach zero neutrality in greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.” – Bander Almohanna, CEO and Managing Director, Flynas
Partnership for Sustainable Tourism
Flynas also joined the United Nation’s Global Compact agency in August 2023 forging closer ties with the UNWTO. The UNWTO’s affiliate members are crucial to the organization’s membership. This network brings together over 500 companies, educational and research institutions, and non-governmental organizations.
Together, these members engage in dialogue, share information, and take action to contribute to sustainable global tourism.
They aim to apply knowledge and innovation to make tourism more responsible and competitive, aligning with the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and the purposes and principles of the United Nations.
Membership with UNWTO
With its affiliation, Flynas joins a prestigious network of global organizations committed to sustainable tourism. The airline’s membership in the UNWTO further strengthens its position as one of the top five LCCs in the world.
Additionally, Flynas also gains increased visibility, networking opportunities, participation, knowledge, support, and cooperation with Tier 1 organizations in the field of tourism.
A Synergistic Alliance
Flynas’s association with the UNWTO is particularly noteworthy given the opening of the organization’s Regional Office for the Middle East in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, in 2021.
The proximity of the regional office to Flynas’s headquarters will allow for strengthened cooperation between the airline and the UNWTO.
Saudi Arabia’s Growing Prominence in Global Tourism
The affiliation came when Saudi Arabia gained increased recognition in the global tourism sector. The Kingdom has been chosen to host the 26th General Assembly session of the UNWTO in 2025, marking the first time it will host the general assembly of a UN organization.
This milestone underscores the country’s growing prominence in global tourism.
A History of Commitment to Sustainability
Flynas’s commitment to sustainability is not new. In August, the airline became the first in Saudi Arabia and the first LCC in the Middle East to join the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
Flynas’s Vision for the Future
Flynas envisions a future where it connects more than 70 domestic and international destinations with over 1500 weekly flights. Since its launch in 2007, the airline has flown more than 60 million passengers. It aims to reach 165 domestic and international destinations by 2030, in line with the objectives of the Saudi Vision 2030.
Recognition for Flynas
Flynas’s dedication to exceptional service has not gone unnoticed. The airline has been recognized with numerous international awards, including the Skytrax International Award for Best Low-cost Airline in the Middle East for the sixth time in 2023.
It was also named the 4th Best LCC worldwide by Skytrax. Moreover, the World Travel Awards named Flynas the Best Low-cost Airline in the Middle East in 2023 for the ninth consecutive time since 2015.
Setting the Standard
Flynas’s affiliation with the UNWTO represents a significant step towards sustainable global tourism. As the first Saudi airline and the first LCC in the Middle East to join the esteemed organization, Flynas is setting the standard for the aviation industry.
Its commitment to sustainability, coupled with its drive to shape the future of global travel, positions Flynas as a leader in the sustainable tourism sector.
