Saudia has announced its largest ever aircraft deal in Saudi Arabian aviation history by agreeing to buy 105 Airbus jets. 

Announced at the Future Aviation Forum in Riyadh the purchase includes Airbus A320 neo and A321 neo planes which will be distributed between Saudia and its low cost carrier, Flyadeal. 

This move aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to increase annual passenger traffic to 330 million and to connect to 250 destinations worldwide.

Saudia Group’s Director General, Engr. Ibrahim Al-Omar articulated the rationale behind this monumental investment, stating, 

“Saudia Group has ambitious operational objectives to meet the escalating demand. We are amplifying flights and seat capacity across our extensive network, with aspirations for further expansion.”

The A320neo Family, renowned as the world’s most popular single-aisle aircraft, boasts an impressive order book exceeding 18,000 units from over 300 customers across diverse markets. 

The A321neo, the largest member of this esteemed family, offers unparalleled range and performance, setting new benchmarks in the industry.

Incorporating cutting-edge technologies, such as new-generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo delivers a remarkable 50% reduction in noise levels and at least 20% fuel savings and CO2 emissions reduction compared to previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. 

These advancements underscore Airbus’ unwavering commitment to maximizing passenger comfort while prioritizing sustainability and environmental stewardship.

To guarantee the optimal state of the new airplanes, Saudia Technic, the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) division of the group, will offer all-inclusive maintenance services. 

This will become even more essential as the MRO Village at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is nearing completion, greatly enhancing the company’s ability to provide services.

Strengthening Saudia Group’s Fleet

The acquisition of the 105 Airbus jets will be strategically distributed between Saudia Group and Flyadeal, further solidifying their respective market positions. 

Saudia Group will take delivery of 54 A321neo aircraft, while flyadeal will receive 12 A320neo and 39 A321neo jets. This influx of new aircraft will increase Saudia Group’s Airbus order backlog to an impressive 144 A320neo Family units.

Saudi Arabia’s National Tourism Strategy has set an audacious target of attracting over 150 million tourists by 2030. This landmark aircraft order bolsters the Kingdom’s ambition to establish itself as a global tourism destination.

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business, underscored the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The new additions of the A320neo family aircraft will play a vital role in contributing to Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan.”

Saudia Group Ambitious Targets

Saudia Group has set forth ambitious targets to cater to the burgeoning travel demands within the Kingdom and beyond. By 2030, the airline aims to transport an astounding 330 million passengers annually while expanding its route network to encompass 250 destinations globally. 

This strategic vision aligns with the Tourism Ministry’s objective of attracting 150 million tourist trips, a target achieved in the previous year ahead of schedule. Moreover, the acquisition supports the goal of increasing the number of pilgrims to an impressive 30 million by the decade’s end.

Outpacing Competitor Offerings

While Saudia Group had previously secured an agreement with Boeing for the order of 39 787 Dreamliners, with options for an additional ten aircraft, the recent Airbus deal surpasses this commitment in scale and strategic significance. 

Similarly, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) owned airline, Riyadh Air, had inked a comparable order with Boeing last year, with options for an additional 33 aircraft.

Saudi Airlines plans to revolutionize Hajj travel by introducing Flying Taxis to transport pilgrims between Jeddah‘s King Abdulaziz International Airport and Makkah hotels during the Hajj and Umrah seasons. 

Saudia has committed to purchasing 100 Lilium aircraft, which are electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft manufactured in Germany. 

These jets offer a sustainable solution with low carbon emissions and can travel up to 250 km while carrying four to six passengers. The new service aims to cater to affluent guests who desire the most luxurious travel experiences.
