California-based Electric Vehicle (EV) startup Lucid Motors has obtained a license to begin electric vehicle production in a special economic zone in Saudi Arabia. Lucid plans to produce 150,000 EVs annually in the King Abdullah Economic City.
The Lucid Motors Journey
Lucid Motors, a company known for setting new standards within the luxury electric vehicle market, is poised to take its revolutionary technology to new heights. With the award-winning Lucid Air under its belt, the company is now setting its sights on global expansion, starting with Saudi Arabia.
The Birth of the First-ever EV Manufacturing Plant
In a significant milestone for both Lucid Motors and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the company has officially inaugurated the first-ever car manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia. This advanced manufacturing plant, dubbed AMP-2, is strategically located in the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Jeddah. It is the first of its kind in the Arab world, designed to produce Lucid’s cutting-edge electric vehicles.
The AMP-2 Facility: A Game-changer
AMP-2, Lucid’s first international plant, has been established with significant support from the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia (MISA), the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF), and the Economic City at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC). This facility is expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating Saudi Arabia’s strategic goal to diversify its economy.
The Vision Behind AMP-2
Lucid Motors’ venture aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 – a plan to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors. Through the development of electric transportation, Lucid Motors will contribute to the Saudi Green Initiative’s goal to ensure that 30% of new car sales in the Kingdom are electric by 2030.
AMP-2: Initial Capacity and Future Goals
The AMP-2 facility has begun with a semi knocked-down (SKD) assembly and initially aims to produce an annual capacity of 5,000 cars. The plant will initially focus on reassembling Lucid Air vehicle ‘kits’ that are pre-manufactured at the company’s U.S. AMP-1 Manufacturing Facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. Eventually, Lucid Motors aims to transition AMP-2 to complete build unit (CBU) production, with an additional expected annual capacity of 150,000 cars.
A Catalyst for Job Creation and Skill Development
The establishment of AMP-2 is not just about car production – it’s about creating a sustainable future for Saudi Arabia. Lucid Motors is creating hundreds of new employment opportunities for Saudi nationals and is expected to grow the workforce into the thousands. In collaboration with the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF), Lucid aims to build a robust, skilled, and localized workforce.
AMP-2: A Boost for Local Supply Chains
The strategic location of the AMP-2 plant near Jeddah is expected to act as a catalyst for the growth of the newly established domestic supply chain. This will create demand for local suppliers and foster long-term growth. Jeddah’s position on the Kingdom’s Red Sea coast provides robust supply chain access by land and sea, enabling Lucid Motors to export its finished luxury electric vehicles to other regions in the future.
The Future of Lucid Motors in Saudi Arabia
The inauguration of Lucid’s AMP-2 facility marks a significant step forward in the company’s global expansion strategy. With support from the Saudi government and a commitment to creating a sustainable future, Lucid Motors is well on its way to delivering Saudi-assembled cars to customers in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
Lucid Motors’ venture into Saudi Arabia represents a significant milestone in the global EV industry. The establishment of an EV manufacturing plant in the region signals a promising future for sustainable transportation in the Arab world. As Lucid Motors continues to pioneer in this field, the world watches with bated breath, waiting to see the development of EVs in Saudi Arabia.
